Running Teams Rounds with Captains

Pair the teams, release the round to captains, fill any empty seats and publish a teams event round.

In a teams event each round has an extra stage. You pair the teams, then each team's captain decides which of their players plays on which table. You can fill any seats the captains leave empty, then publish the round as normal. Everything on your side happens on Game Day > Pairings. Captains do their part in the Battle Hub.

Before the day

Every team needs a captain. Set them in Setup > Teams (open the team's ⋮ menu and choose Edit Team). See Doubles and Teams Setup.

A team that is short of players, or has a dropped player, cannot be paired. When you pair you will see Some teams can't be paired listing them. Keep players on the roster if they have to leave, and score their game instead.

1. Pair the teams

  1. Click Pair Teams.
  2. Check the matchups. Each row is one team against another, with the block of tables they play on, for example T1–3.
  3. To change who plays whom, drag a team onto another team to swap them. Click the lock between two teams (Lock this matchup) to keep them together if you re-pair.
  4. To keep a team on the same tables every round, open the team's ... menu and choose Lock to tables T1–3.

You can also click Add Match to put two teams together yourself, or Re-pair Teams to start again. Locked matchups are kept. More on locks in Moving Players and Locking Tables.

2. Release to captains

Click Release to Captains. The round moves to Captain Assigning.

Each captain is emailed their opponent, their tables and a link to the Battle Hub. Emails only go out if the event is published and Player notifications enabled is on in Setup > Communications.

From here you can no longer drag teams around. To change the team matchups, click Recall from Captains (see Going back a step, below).

3. What captains do

In the Battle Hub, captains get a Team tab with a count of the matchups waiting on them. It shows Assign matchups and one card per table, such as M1 · Table 3.

  1. The captain picks one player from their team and one from the opposing team for a table.
  2. They tap Submit matchup. The card shows Awaiting opp and they can still Edit it.
  3. The other captain sees the card marked Review. They tap Accept, or Accept all to accept every matchup waiting for them.
  4. When every table is agreed, both captains see All matchups confirmed.

Either captain can fill in any table, and a player can only sit at one table. How captains take turns choosing is up to your event pack. Other team members see who plays whom, with TBD for seats that are still empty.

4. Check progress and fill the gaps

On the Pairings tab, each matchup heading shows where it is up to:

  • 2 unassigned: seats still empty.
  • 1 pending confirm: one captain has submitted and the other has not accepted yet.
  • All confirmed: done.

You can step in at any point:

  • Pick a player for a seat yourself from the Select from list under each table. Choose Clear assignment to empty a seat.
  • Click Confirm on a matchup heading to accept its pending matchups for the captain.
  • Click the dice button (Randomly fill 3 open slots) to fill every empty seat at random with players from the right team who are not seated yet. On a phone this is a full-width button. Seats already filled, including ones waiting to be accepted, are left alone.

5. Publish and start

  1. Click Publish Pairings. It stays greyed out until every seat has a player. Hover over it to see how many are open (on a phone it reads Assign all players first). Matchups still waiting for a captain to accept do not hold it up.
  2. Every player is emailed their table and opponent, as in any other event.
  3. When everyone is seated, click Start Round.

Captains can still change seats in the Battle Hub after you publish, up until you click Start Round.

Scoring then works as in any other event: each table is scored, and the matchup heading shows the running team result, such as 2/3 scored, then the final score and winner. Team soft scores, such as painting, are entered on each team captain's match, marked with a crown.

Going back a step

  • Recall from Captains (while captains are assigning): takes the round back to pairing so you can move teams again. Captains can no longer pick players. Seats they already filled are kept, except on matchups you move or when you click Re-pair Teams.
  • Reopen Matchups (after you publish, before the round starts): takes the round back to the captains' stage with every seat kept, and hides the pairings from players. You and the captains can change seats, then click Publish Pairings again. Only the players whose table or opponent changed are emailed again.

To change the team matchups after publishing, click Reopen Matchups and then Recall from Captains.
