How Masters Ranking Points Are Calculated
How each event becomes Masters ranking points, including round multipliers and the Strength of Field bonus.
Every eligible event in your region's season is worth a pot of ranking points. Where you finish decides how much of that pot you get, and your best few results add up to your Masters ranking.
Your region's exact numbers are set by the region admins and shown on the Masters Rankings page. The numbers below are the common defaults.
Step 1: Is the event eligible?
- It is a ranked event in a format the season counts (usually singles only).
- It has at least the minimum number of players (usually 10).
- It passes the season's comp filter, if there is one (for example, Battle March events excluded).
Ineligible events still appear in your history but give 0 ranking points.
Step 2: The event's base points
Base points start at Min Points (80) when the event has exactly the minimum number of players, and go up by 1 for every extra player, capped at Max Points (100).
| Players | Base points |
|---|---|
| 10 | 80 |
| 12 | 82 |
| 20 | 90 |
| 30 or more | 100 |
Small events: if the army size is below the season's Small Event Cap Threshold, base points never go above Min Points, however many players attend.
Step 3: Round multiplier
Base points are multiplied by the number of rounds played. By default 3 rounds = 0.8, 4 rounds = 0.9, 5 or more = 1.0. A 12 player, 3 round event is worth 82 × 0.8 = 65.6.
Step 4: Strength of Field bonus
Some regions add a bonus when strong players turn up. It rewards events that attract last season's best players, so beating a tougher field is worth a little more.
- It looks at the region's previous season final overall rankings, top N players only (Top N Players, e.g. top 30 or top 50). A region's first season has no bonus.
- Each of those players who attends adds a small amount. The #1 player adds the Rank #1 Bonus (0.25), the #N player adds the Rank #N Bonus (0.1), and everyone in between is scaled evenly.
- All attendees' bonuses are added together, up to the Maximum Bonus (8), and that total is added to the event's points from Step 3.
Per player: bonus = Rank #1 Bonus − (rank − 1) × (Rank #1 Bonus − Rank #N Bonus) ÷ (N − 1)
With top 30, 0.25 and 0.1, each place lower is worth about 0.005 less:
| Last season's rank | Adds |
|---|---|
| #1 | 0.250 |
| #4 | 0.234 |
| #15 | 0.178 |
| #29 | 0.105 |
| #30 | 0.100 |
| #31 or lower | 0 |
The bonus is small on purpose. It nudges the value of an event, it does not replace player count and rounds as the main factor.
Step 5: Your share, by finishing position
The event total is shared out by where you finish: your points = event total × (players − your rank + 1) ÷ players. The winner gets the full total, last place gets 1 ÷ players of it.
Worked example
12 players, 3 rounds, 2,000 points. Four of last season's top 30 attend, ranked #4, #14, #15 and #29.
- Base points: 80 + 2 extra players = 82.
- Round multiplier: 82 × 0.8 = 65.6.
- Strength of Field: 0.234 + 0.183 + 0.178 + 0.105 = 0.70. Event total = 66.30.
- Shares: 1st gets 66.30, 2nd gets 66.30 × 11 ÷ 12 = 60.78, 6th gets 66.30 × 7 ÷ 12 = 38.68, 12th gets 5.53.
Step 6: Your season total
Only your best few results count (Top Results Count, usually 3 or 4). Extra events can only replace a weaker result, never lower your total. The top players at the end of the season (Masters Cutoff) qualify for Masters.
For region admins
All of these values live in Region Admin > edit the season > Scoring Settings. Changing them recalculates the whole season, including past events, so use Simulation Preview before you click Update Season.
Not to be confused with Strength of Schedule, a tiebreaker inside a single event. See FAQ: Pairings, Tiebreakers & Strength of Schedule.
